Electrical engineering for design, construction, and operating facilities—power systems, studies, controls, commissioning, and owner support.

Electrical system studies

Arc flash, protection coordination, and short-circuit analysis as a clear service line within the wider practice.

Arc flash studies

An arc flash study calculates incident energy and arc flash boundaries at electrical equipment so workers know approach limits and required PPE. Studies are typically modelled in Bentley EasyPower from a verified single-line and equipment data.

What it covers

System model, bolted fault and arcing fault evaluation, incident energy results, PPE categories or cal/cm² levels, and labelling recommendations consistent with applicable CSA and NFPA practice.

When it is needed

New or upgraded distribution; major equipment changes; outdated or missing labels; insurance, audit, or OH&S requirements; after significant load or utility changes.

Typical deliverables

  • Study report with assumptions and results
  • Updated single-line as required
  • Arc flash labels (or label schedule)
  • Mitigation options where energy is high

Breaker & protection coordination

Coordination studies set protective device curves so a fault is cleared by the nearest upstream device. That limits the outage area, reduces equipment damage, and supports selective operation of breakers, fuses, and relays.

What it covers

Time-current curves for breakers, fuses, and relays; settings recommendations; review of sensor ratios, trip units, and protective device options available on site.

When it is needed

New switchgear or MCC installations; nuisance tripping; plant expansions; after utility or transformer changes; when arc flash mitigation depends on faster clearing times.

Typical deliverables

  • Coordination study report
  • TCC plots for key paths
  • Recommended device settings
  • Notes on selectivity vs. arc flash trade-offs

Short-circuit studies

Short-circuit (fault current) analysis determines available fault levels throughout the system and checks that equipment interrupting and withstand ratings are adequate.

What it covers

Utility and on-site contribution; three-phase and line-to-ground fault levels as applicable; comparison of results to equipment ratings; identification of overdutied devices.

When it is needed

Equipment specification or replacement; utility service changes; generator or large motor additions; as the foundation for coordination and arc flash studies.

Typical deliverables

  • Fault current summary by bus
  • Equipment duty evaluation
  • Recommendations for undersized devices
  • Model inputs suitable for follow-on studies
